What a horrible time for everyone! Just when I thought it was bad it got worse.

When I started life in UK in the 50s the war was very present still. Rationing was only finally stopped a couple of years before I was born. UK might have ‘won the war’ but they certainly ‘lost the peace’. There were bomb sites all over and it was all pretty drab and poor.  I just remember the colours of my childhood being greys and browns.

The one good thing was that there was a feeling that we would now build a better fairer society for all. That alas was ploughed under in the 80s with Thatcher and Regan and the neo liberal agenda.

The situation for Julie in the states was very different. They were into a period of prosperity and I think even during WW2 US did not suffer the privations of UK.

It is with sadness that I look out at the world. The climate crisis is bad enough but the war in Ukraine is just pure folly instigated by the puerile vanity of one man and his acolytes. I had hoped that we learned something from WW2 and that lesson is that ultimately war benefits no one in the long run and especially the common people of the world.

Whether or not we end up in total war at this time in history the gruesome fact, worse than war itself, remains that humans do not learn. There is something in our psyche which is blind to the consequences of attempting to destroy ourselves.
